Description: This set is based on a set originally published in Rome, 1599 by Ioan Anthony de Pauli (Giovanni Antonio de Paoli; c. 1589-1630). Ref: Bartsch 1333-1341. This set are copies in reverse published by Pieter de Jode, in ca. 1630. They are not the series in reverse known as Months II (engraved by Sadeler). Paper has no watermark. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Antonius Lucini fec. Published by Pet. De Iode excud. Anton Francesco Lucini (1610 - after 1661) was an Italian engraver and printmaker, best known for his etchings of the work Dell'Arcano del Mare by Sir Robert Dudley. Petrus, or Pieter de Jode I (Antwerp: 1570-1634) was a Flemish Baroque painter and engraver. He learned drawing and engraving first from his father, the map maker Gerard de Jode, and later from Hendrik Goltzius.
Technical Details
- Subject: Antique series of prints, titled 'Illustissimo et Reverendissimo d.d. Petro Cardinali Aldobrandino Menses XII Anni Solaris': a title page and 11 prints depicting months. Title page contains title within a border, zodiac signs to the left and right, time personified, and two solar deities on chariots. Each of the months shows a particular activity, such as Jousting, Hunting, Falcon hunting, Harvest, Threshing etc. Lacks december.
