Cayenne is a chili pepper species native to the tropic regions of Central and South America. Its characteristic fiery heat comes courtesy of capsaicin, the chemical compound found in the fruiting body of pepper plants. Named after a town in French Guiana, the cayenne pepper can range from 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Units, the measurement used to quantify the amount of heat produced by various pepper types. Cayenne can be used topically as an antibacterial and as a natural pain reliever. When applied directly to the skin, capsaicin desensitizes local nerve endings by blocking the neurotransmitter called substance P, which carries pain signals to the brain. For this reason, capsaicin has been found to be useful against the painful damage to nerves in the body.* Cayenne also has cardiovascular and circulation benefits. Cayenne and other red chili peppers help to reduce blood cholesterol and platelet aggregation. Capsaicin alters the part of the body that regulates body temperature, which stimulates proper blood flow to the hands and feet and improves general blood circulation within the organs of the body.* *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
