Imagine millions of colorful butterflies flying around overhead, in front of you, hanging in trees and on your clothes. Why these Monarch butterflies migrate to the same places in Mexico is a mystery. It has been suggested that regional magnetism stemming from nearby mountains (remember, this is a former mining town) emits what in essence is a homing beacon for the monarchs (http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/mexico/monarchs.html). I visited Rosario and Chincua sanctuaries two times. First time in 2013 and later in 2014. The first time was a total bust. It was cold and raining, so the Monarchs were dormant and did not fly. Imagine millions of butterflies hanging off tree branches. I vowed to return, and I did next year. I spend 2 days at the site, and took thousands of photographs. This is the photo I like the most from both trips.
